Family Orientation

Dear Parents and Families of the Class of 2022,

Congratulations on your student’s admittance into the George Washington University. We are excited to welcome you and your family into the GW community!

Colonial Inauguration (CI), GW’s undergraduate orientation program for new students and families, strives to provide valuable resources that will aid in your transition over the next several months.  Student orientation will primarily take place on campus.  Family orientation takes place in a hybrid format – online throughout the summer and then an optional in-person Family Welcome on August 25th from 9am-12pm (Mount Vernon Campus students) and 11am-4pm (Foggy Bottom Campus students) where we will serve light refreshments and host a university services fair.  Click here for additional information.

Before attending CI, your student should complete the online GW 101 Module.   This pre-orientation program will introduce your student to their GW experience – from academics to financial aid, to ways that they can be involved in our campus community.  This module also includes information on how to register for classes and how to contact an academic advisor.   Completing this online module before arriving for CI will ensure that your student gets the most out of the academic, advising, and community-building sessions offered.

The next several months are a time of transition for parents and families as well.  To help you learn about GW and our community, we have created an online First Class module for parents and families. Your online module will offer welcome videos, school-specific information, how you can support your student through the transition process, resources on campus, and more.  We will also be adding a webinar schedule, weekly tips and foundational resources for you and your student.  Throughout your student’s first semester, your online module will be updated with new and relevant information, so be sure to keep this log-in information easily accessible.  It is our hope that after you’ve spent time browsing the Family Orientation module and the online family portal, you will have a better understanding of the opportunities and the resources for you and your student.
